WAI.TAI – May 1st LFMC Concert

WAI.TAI – May 1st LFMC Concert

Fresh from the International Jazz Festival in Whanganui to Levin, this group WAI.TAI has been wowing audiences up and down NZ.  You can check them on www.waitaimusic.nz or FB Waitai@waitaimusic

SATURDAY MAY 1ST, 2021   –  WAI.TAI are a Maori-World fusion collective featuring members from Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin & New Plymouth under the direction of Robyn Kamira who writes and arranges the songs and tunes in Te Reo Maori and English. They have headlined at all the major folk festivals in Aotearoa, and their first EP ‘Hoea’ has surpassed half a million plays on Spotify. WAI.TAI merges both original contemporary and traditional music from right here in Aotearoa, with music from all over the world, and infuses Te Reo Maori seamlessly into and across the music.

WAI.TAI line-ups vary and musicians for each concert are selected from around the country to ensure that the best mix of instruments and styles come together for the occasion. The range of iwi affiliations amongst musicians include Te Rarawa, Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Tamatera, Te Ati Awa, Ngapuhi and many more. Their international affiliations include American, English, Rarotongan, Israeli and more.

Featured in the Levin concert are Robyn Kamira, Te Auripo Kamira, Antony Royal, Ruby Mae Hinepunui Solly and Michael Muggeridge.  All amazing musicians, they bring their individual talents to the evening, which will be exciting in its blend of Te Reo and English.

WAI.TAI – songlines are recreated, the sounds, harmonies and rhythms of traditional Maori songs & chants, fused with World music.
The southern-most ocean currents converge with oceans that unite all peoples. The music honours our connections. The songs are embodied by the call of the feminine voices, earthy percussions and delicate strings. The lyrics are in both Maori and English and the arrangements are a carefully crafted soundscape. Emotive, subtle and heartening. Nau mai, haere mai

Doors open at 7pm at Levin Folk Music Club, 155 Bartholomew Road, Levin.  Light refreshments available for koha.  Easy access and parking available. Door sales are $20/$15 unwaged GC/$10 students.  Any queries – please txt Dale Webb 027 2079695 or committee members.

August Concert with Bob and Kate

August Concert with Bob and Kate

The LFMC concert featuring Bob Cooper-Grundy and Kate Marshall will go ahead as planned on Friday 14 August – Doors open 7pm with the guests performing after an open mic and  intermission.  Due to Covid Level 2 conditions, the Committee will ensure distancing of chairs, sanitizers and hygiene as much as possible, with masks optional.  Supper is not being provided but you are welcome to bring your own snacks and beverage.

Our guests are multi-instrumentalists and play various genres of music (but mainly Americana/blues) very well indeed.  Kate adds beautiful vocals and her skills on piano accordian and flute/fiddle are legendary.  Bob has a great voice for the blues and his resonator guitar is a special treat for his fans.  Looking forward to hearing them again after their 2019 concert here was cancelled.  Hope you can make it along as our upcoming concerts may be in jeopardy.

There will be an open mic followed by a floor spot by Kevin Watson prior to the main concert.  Come by 7pm to add your name to the compere’s list.

In AGM news:  Our 2020 committee comprises Dianne Madill as Chairperson, Val Jenkins as Treasurer, Jean Hollis as Secretary, with Dale Webb as PR/Bookings and John Jenkins as committee members.  Thanks for the support of these hardworking members, and if you can offer your time on a concert night for either setup/kitchen/cleanup/other – that would be amazing and much appreciated.

UPDATE:   ANNETTE ESQUINET AND STEPH CASEY PERFORM JULY 10

Hello to all our folk club members and friends,

I am happy to report that our first concert night post COVID19 was a great success, and we all coped with the remaining restrictions. It now seems clear that we can relax a little and will no longer be compelled to social distancing, limited numbers and such things.

Our concert on July 10th will feature Adam McGrath, a very talented singer songwriter. Adam has toured and played with everyone from Fleetwood Mac  to Steve Earle to Paul Kelly to Old Crow Medicine. Described by RNZ as “a national treasure “, Adam McGrath is at home with bluegrass, blues, country and rock ‘n roll as much as he is with folk, and is known for the intensity, passion, love and humour of his performances.

As the June concert proved so successful, with the main event beginning at 7.30 pm, we are going to repeat this timing.  In the cold winter season many people appreciated the earlier start, and those who wanted to go home early were able to do so. Our July concert coincides with the Mid-Winter Holler at Tatum Park, which several of our members plan to attend, so an earlier departure for this event will be appreciated by them.

We will also reduce the supper time available.  Hot tea or coffee will be available, but many of the participants at the June concert felt that it was unnecessary to have the kind of supper we have supplied for the last few years.  The team producing supper were relieved to be freed up somewhat and to not have a lot of preparation before the concert or cleanup to do at the end of the night.  Hopefully a simpler supper will encourage other club members to help out, even if only for one concert night in the year.

We are looking at the volunteers’ tasks again and would like to ask you to consider helping in some way. A schedule of tasks for the rest of this year will  be passed around at the July concert, and we would appreciate it if any able-bodied members could put their names down in at least one slot, or talk to one of the committee members about how you would be prepared to assist.

Bob & Kate

Bob & Kate

Advance notice of our August 14th  concert  – Bob Cooper-Grundy and Kate Marshall.  This concert will return to the former timing, with the guests’ concert following the Blackboard, as these guests are travelling from further afield. More details in the next email.

Happily Dale is hosting a House Concert this month, featuring Ronel Hunter, (whose LFMC concert had to be postponed with the pandemic lockdown.)  This concert will be held on Sunday 19th July at 3.- 5.30 pm. Ronel is a lovely singer/songwriter who plays contemporary originals and covers. She writes songs about real life and her focus is on the story a song has to tell. Please reserve your seat with dalewebb143@gmail.com or text 027 2079695.  Koha is $10 pp plus a small plate to share, and Dale invites you to feel free to arrive early to mingle and grab yourself a comfy chair.

AGM

AGM

Our AGM for this year will be held on Wednesday August 12th in the Scottish Hall at 7.30pm. Please consider whether you would like to nominate anyone for the role of Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary or Committee member.  Nomination forms will be available at the next Concert night on July 10th and will also be attached to the email to members giving official notice of the AGM which you should receive in early July.

Keep cosy and enjoy lots of good music in these cold winter months.
